Constant’s New Babylon

I’m reading Constant’s New Babylon by Mark Wigley, highly recommend by Richard and FJ. It is about a utopian project that consisted of ‘a vast, layered, sheltered structure, supported by pillars and covering the entire earth’. Wigley has some great architectural ideas, besides, some deep thinkings about our society, which I need some time to digest…

…from time to time everyone feels the need to be alone; to isolate themselves; to make love, rest, or in the case of illness. To be continually on the road is impossible, unbearable.

The process of design gets more painful to me as time goes by. I felt the changes on my attitude in the last two years. I’m already tired of them even at the start of this semester. ‘ To be on the road continually is unbearable ‘, I reckon. But someday, I’ll be back to the road again.

PS. Accidentally, I found the sectional image on page109 familiar. There was a background image on Radiohead’s official website years ago(see below). I presume this book is its very source. Anyone wanna guess the connection between Wigley and Radiohead? ;)
